About Simon Britton

Simon Britton

Simon Britton is a web and systems developer based in Birmingham, UK, and is currently working as a programmer for a global ISP. His role is in networks development which has meant getting his hands dirty with clustered server applications, shellcode and greyhat culture.

"I have been professionally involved with the internet for over 15 years, initially cutting my teeth on CGI scripts on an Amiga 500 with Demon Internet.
Before this, BBS's, and (some time!) before that, network-less with an Oric (the Sinclair Spectrum rival) in around 1983."

"My OS's of choice are *nix based - particulary FreeBSD and Ubuntu linux. FreeBSD offers the security and stability which is ideal for the role of a server, while Ubuntu offers everything the desktop user could need. Not being much of a console fan, I also have a high spec desktop running Windows Vista which I dedicate to gaming and frowning at."

"Perl is my first language and what bought me into serious hacking. I consider perl the most beautiful and the craziest language in existence. It can frighten novices but can also welcome them with open arms with its speed of deployment and the availability of prewritten code to do anything (CPAN)."

"PHP, a language fast becoming one to take seriously is, in my opinion, excellent because now people of any skill level can produce dynamic web apps, and learn by their mistakes when they meet XSS or injection - I tend to do a lot of PHP and have been successfully dragged kicking into the world of OO and design patterns."

"I'm gradually mastering C and i386 assembler (a damn site more fiddly than m68k), both of which I use when there is no easier way or I feel like a challenge. "

"For relaxation, I attempt this either using the good old English pub, or the beautiful UK coastline, but generaly fail."
